Kitsune Companion (Level 1)

A kitsune has chosen you to be its companion. This companionship shows the trust you have in each other and what each of you will do to protect one another, while bonded in such a way.

  • Combat

Your kitsune companion obeys your commands as best they can (no action required). They share your initiative count, taking their turn directly after yours. You determine their actions, decisions, attitudes, and so on. If you are incapacitated or absent, your companion acts on their own. If you die, the companion will run away.

  • Statistics

Your kitsune companion uses your proficiency bonus instead of their own. In addition to that, your Wisdom modifier is used for various features and abilities, as indicated on one of the kitsune sheet. In addition to that you determine your kitsune companion's ability scores, using the stats provided below.

  • Hit Points

For each level you gain after 1st, your kitsune companion gains an additional hit die and increases Hit Points accordingly, as shown on the sheet.

  • Stat Increase

Whenever you choose an Ability Score Improvement or other Feat, your kitsune companion may increase their ability score as well, in the same fashion as picking the ability score improvement feat. The kitsune companion cannot increase an ability score above 20, using this feature.

  • Proficiencies

Your kitsune companion gains proficiency in two skills of your choice and proficiency in Dexterity and Charisma saving throws.

  • Dying and Restoration

Whenever your kitsune companion is reduced to 0 Hit Points and isn't stable, they will make Death Saving Throws. On three failures they won't die, but will remain unconscious until you spend a Long Rest in quiet contemplation over their body to reawaken it. However, effects that destroy the body will still outright kill it. If this happens, or you don't have access to the body, you can spend a Long Rest and 25 gold worth of offerings to resummon the spirit of your companion. Your companion will then appear at the end of the Long Rest.

  • Personality

Your kitsune companion has a personality of their own. You can choose or roll for a personality trait, ideal, and flaw from the tables below. Its bond is always "The witch who is my companion is someone who I would protect at all costs, as long as they would do the same."

Spellcasting (Level 1)

Your bond with your kitsune companion has granted you the ability to use magic.

  • Cantrips (0-Level Spells)

At 1st level, you know two cantrips of your choice from the kitsune witch spell list. At higher levels, you learn additional kitsune witch cantrips of your choice, as shown in the Cantrips Known column of the Kitsune Witch table.

When you gain a level in this class, you can replace one of the kitsune witch cantrips you know with another cantrip from the kitsune witch spell list.

  • Preparing and Casting Spells

The Kitsune Witch table shows how many spell slots you have to cast your kitsune witch spells. To cast one of your kitsune witch spells of 1st level or higher, you must expend a slot of the spell's level or higher. You regain all expended spell slots when you finish a Long Rest.

You prepare the list of kitsune witch spells that are available for you to cast, choosing from the kitsune witch spell list. When you do so, choose a number of kitsune witch spells equal to the prepared spells shown in the Kitsune Witch table. The spells must be of a level for which you have spell slots.

For example, if you are a 5th-level kitsune witch, you have four 1st-level and two 2nd-level spell slots, with 6 prepared spells. Your list of prepared spells can include four spells of 1st or 2nd-level, in any combination. If you prepare the 1st-level spell cure wounds, you can cast it using a 1st-level or a 2nd-level slot. Casting the spell doesn't remove it from your list of prepared spells.

You can change your list of prepared spells when you finish a long rest. Preparing a new list of Kitsune Witch spells requires time spent playing or spending time with your kitsune companion: at least 1 minute per spell level for each spell on your list.

  • Spellcasting Ability

Wisdom is your spellcasting ability for your kitsune witch spells, since their power derives from the understanding you have with your kitsune companion. You use your Wisdom whenever a spell refers to your spellcasting ability. In addition, you use your Wisdom modifier when setting the saving throw DC for a kitsune witch spell you cast and when making an attack roll with one.

Your bond with your kitsune companion has reached its maximum potential. This has led you to develop characteristics associated with your kitsune's aspect. For example, your hair may become like clouds, your skin becomes slightly translucent, or you are always leaving puddles of water where you have stood for a little while.

As a Bonus Action you can manifest forth the energy of the master invigorator, for 1 minute. You and your kitsune companion gain the following benefits:

  • Restoration

You and allies, within the aura, regain 10 Hit Points at the end of their turn.

  • Protection

You and allies, within the aura, gain advantage on Attack Rolls.

  • Condition Immunity

You cannot be affected by the Blinded, Charmed, Deafened, Diseased, Frightened, Paralysed, Petrified, and Poisoned conditions. If you are affected by one of those conditions, before activation of this feature, it becomes suppressed while the feature is active.

Once you use this feature, you cannot do so again, until you finish a Long Rest.

Scarring Kitsune

Scarring Kitsune (Level 3)

Outnumber and Kill Your Foe

A scarring kitsune is feared by most people. These kitsunes are ones who don't have patience for mistakes. If you make one, they won't hesitate to end you quickly. Thus people often avoid these kitsunes as much as possible.

Scarring Spells

When you choose this subclass, you always have certain spells prepared after you reach particular levels in this class, as shown in the Scarring Spells table. These spells count as kitsune witch spells for you, but they don't count against the number of kitsune witch spells you prepare.

Kitsune Aspect

Your kitsune companion gains their aspect. This aspect shows which kitsune sheet you'll be using from now on, as well as certain subclass features you'll gain. Choose one of these aspects:

  • Fire

A kitsune aspected to fire has an inferno burning inside of them, one that must be released from time to time. If you choose this aspect, you now use the Fire Kitsune statblock for your kitsune companion and gain the following feature:

    Fire Burst
  • Sound

A kitsune aspected to sound is one that hears everything and can amplify what you hear. Which is often used to deafen their opponent. If you choose this aspect, you now use the Sound Kitsune statblock for your kitsune companion and gain the following feature:

    Sound Burst
  • Thunder

A kitsune aspected to thunder absorbs and releases lighting from its fur at will. They only get their name for the sound this release makes. If you choose this aspect, you now use the Thunder Kitsune statblock for your kitsune companion and gain the following feature:

    Lightning Burst
  • Wind

A kitsune aspected to wind is very graceful, just like the wind. They use this grace to quickly slice up their enemies. If you choose this aspect, you now use the Wind Kitsune statblock for your kitsune companion and gain the following feature:

    Wind Speed

Painful Weave

You have learned how to hurt your foes more efficiently. You may cast Painful Weave once without expending a spell slot, but you must finish a Long Rest before you can cast it in this way again.

Damaging Aura (Level 7)

The will to hurt others has manifested around you and your kitsune companion. You and your kitsune companion gain an aura that has a radius of 5 feet. The effect of the aura depends on your kitsune's aspect. You can only grant these benefits while not Incapacitated.

At Kitsune Witch level 15, the radius of the aura increases to 10 feet.

Damaging Wind Aura

Wounding Strike (Level 11)

Injuring Tactics (Level 15)

Your bond with your kitsune companion has granted you a new tactic. Your new tactic depends on your kitsune's aspect.

When one of you uses this feature, neither can do so again, until you finish a Short or Long Rest.

Your bond with your kitsune companion has reached its maximum potential. This has led you to develop characteristics associated with your kitsune's aspect. For example, your hair may resemble fire, your voice is louder than any crowd, lightning sparks across your skin, or your hair is always waving in the wind.

As a Bonus Action you can manifest forth the energy of the master invigorator, for 1 minute. You and your kitsune companion gain the following benefits:

The extra damage from the aura now also adds your Kitsune Witch level to it.
